Shadow sat back again, having finished bandaging Merlas' back legs. She turned towards Natalie, a slightly haunted look on her face.

Natalie looked at Shadow, and the colour drained from her face.

"Oh lord...what's wrong?" she asked her friend.

Shadow sighed, moving to sit next to the fire. The dancing light illuminated the shadows on her face, making her seem older.
"There's a... problem... with my lineage of demon..."

Natalie searched her brain...trying to trace the meaning of these words.

She gave up.

"What does that mean?" she asked.

"Jamie's safe from this, and he doesn't know." Shadow explained. "It only happens to one person in every generation of demon, and this time it befalls me."

Shadow nodded solemnly, looking into the fire. Merlas dozed behind her, one ear flicking lazily.
