Alone by the glittering stream

Alba Manticora sat on a boulder by the stream that ran through the forest she loved so much. She had been going there for as long as she could remember. It had always been a place of refuge, a place where she could forget the real world and sing her heart out. No one could hear her there. No one ever went there. It was untouched by the outer world. A safe haven where she could think and clear her mind under the shade of the trees around her.
Alba looked deep into the water. It was summer and the water was bright and cool. She took off her shoes and socks and slipped her feet under the little waves. She felt the current against her skin and smiles. This was her kind of heaven. This was where she wanted to stay forever.

A black panther slunk out of the trees, making its way over to Alba. It morphed into the lithe, tall form of Vrael. The half demon sat next to Alba silently, preserving the sound of birdsong and the sound of the stream.

Alba looked round sharply, alarm showing on her face. Then she recognised Vrael and relaxed. She put her head on his shoulder, savouring every second. She closed her eyes and listened to the birds and the sound of running water surrounding her. Bliss, she thought.

Vrael gently put a hand n Alba's waist, smiling slightly. He loved the silence, and he loved being with Alba.

Alba sighed peacfully.
Suddenly the silence was broken and Alba jerked to alertness. The spun round to see...

Alba relaxed a bit, then realised that Vrael's arm was still around her waist, and pushed it away hurridly. She could feel her blood rushing to fill her face. Raven's teleportation was a usefull gift to have, but if she was going to use it to intrude on other people's privacy, Alba wouldn't trust her for much longer.

"Vrael." Raven's voice was quiet, but dangerous. Vrael bristled, almost like adog raising its hackles.

Alba stood and looked Raven in the eyes. What does she want? Alba asked herself. She didn't think it in a nasty way, but she wanted to know.

"This be none of your business." Vrael snarled at his sister.
"You know the rules James."

James? thought Alba. She didn't comment on the name, but instead said:
"Rules? What rules?"

"People of our blood do not mix at all, especially not with humans." Raven said.

Alba felt hot with anger. WHo was she to tell her what to do when... no, sorry, i was gonna say when she's pregnant herself, but that's anothier topic.
Alba said coldly,
"Vrael has the right to do what he wants. Maybe when you find the right person, you'll understand, but i don't see how you can now."

Raven ignored Alba.
"And the prophecy, Vrael? Can you do it?"

Vrael was silent.

Prophecy. Alba had heard that word too many times while talking about the Roth/Mercian familly. It was all to do with prophecy. Prophecy she didn't understand. Prophecy she'd probably never understand, but now that it was in between her and Vrael, she wanted to know more.

"He never told you, did he? Some boyfriend and protector he is." Raven said, smirking.
"Be quiet!" Vrael barked. "Worry us not with trivial matters that may be circumnavigated!"

Alba frowned. Raven was getting on her nerves, but the craving for knowledge twitched inside her.
"Tell me about this prophecy of yours. What is stopping me and Vrael from being together?"

Raven chuckled quietly to herself.
"Because in the end, you will die. He says that I interpreted it wrong, but I didn't. Shadow agreed with me."

Alba stayed silent. What the...
"How? Why?"
SHe turned to Vrael, gently placing her hand on his arm. She searched his gaze with her piercing green eyes.

Vrael's silvery gaze pierced Raven.
"The prophecy said there was one, one girl I would be albe to love."

Alba didn't smile. She continued to stare into Vrael's silver eyes, serching for answers.
"What else did the prophecy say?"

Vrael bowed his head.
"That every girl I loved until I found her would die."

"Why? What would be drastic enough to make people die?" Alba was getting worried, "What do you mean?"

"I do not know." Vrael said quietly.

Alba felt tears in her eyes. She stood on tip toes to whisper into Vrael's ear so Raven didn't hear.
"I don't care if I die. I can't live without you. Not now, not ever."
