Memory Lane (Shadow and Holly)

"Well that went well." Holly commented sliding down the wall of her own cell and sighing.

"Tell me about it." Shadow muttered.

"I think I dropped my wand in there..." Holly muttered sadly, "Im such a dingus...."

"No, just a scaredycat." Shadow said.

"That's worse!" Holly groaned, kicking the wall.

"Perhaps." Shadow said.

Holly sighed, and calmed ever so slightly.
"So....when were you gonna tell me....?" she asked differently.

"I wasn't planning to." Shadow said darkly.

Holly's face crumpled.
"But I .... I wouldnt of minded!" she said, "I thought we were ...."
She left this hanging.

"We are. But you don't announce to your friend that you're an assassin." Shadow said.

Holly nodded slowly.
"I wouldn't have minded though...." she mumbled.

"You might have minded something else though." Shadow said. She was hiding an even darker secret from her friend.

This statement did not register with Holly for a moment.
"What?" she asked quickly, "What? Tell me? Please...."

"Think back Holly, do you remember the night your parents died?" Shadow asked.

Holly froze.
"Wha......no..." she lied, heart beating furiously.

Shadow's sigh answered Holly's question. She remembered the assignement clearly. Voldemort had hired one of her clan's assassins to kill these people, and she had been the only one with nothing to do.

Holly swallowed.
"Well you .... I mean you...."
She stopped. "What?"

"Holly, don't you remember coming down stairs and seeing me?" Shadow asked.

Holly racked her brain furiously, opening the file she said she would never open again.
"I....maybe...." she said weakly, trying to digest this.

"I remember seeing you." Shadow said. "I disappeared soon after that."

"And you didn't think to mention this?" Holly asked in disbelief, "Uh, ever?!"

"Holly, one, the subject is a bit tender for the pair of us, and two, I have never read a rule about friendship where you announce that you murdered your best friend's parents!" Shadow snapped.

"I don't see why you're mad at me." Holly said, and then added in a mutter, "I'm not the murderer...."

Shadow clamped her hands over her ears, not wanting to hear any stabs at her time as an assassin.

Holly swallowed and shut her eyes tightly hoping to block everything else out.
