Cackles Academy for Witches (Shadow and Natalie)

Natalie smiled at the mare
"Everything will be ok...I've given birth...you'll be fine..." she said, "do not fear..."
She stroked Merlas' mane gently.

*three hours later because I don't think it would be very fitting to do a biology lesson on here*

Merlas close dher eyes tiredly as Shadow draped the blanket over her and wrapped the small, black foal in the towel. A small, inquisitive nose poked out from the folds, sniffing the new air.

Natalie, wiping sweat off her forehead, smiled at the Merlas.
"Congratulations....it's a boy...well...actually...I dunno what it is...Shadow...what is it?"

"A boy." Shadow said with a smile as the foal shook the rest of the materiel off his head, tiny black ears pricked and mischevious eyes glinting. Merlas sighed quietly before getting to her feet and sniffing at the foal, licking him gently.

"Bonding..." Natalie smiled, "a mother in the making."

Shadow gently put the foal on the ground, where he shook the towel off completely and struggled to stand up on spindly legs that were far too long for his body.

Natalie looked at the foal.
"I read that he needs to stand to reach his mothers milk...am I right?" she asked.

"Yes, and also, in the wild, they have to be able to run quickly in case of predators." Shadow said as the foal sneezed. Wings, that had been stuck to his body, flared as he did. The foal promtly fell down on hus backside, looking bemused. Merlas snickered quietly.

Natalie smiled.
"How long are they pregnant for? Longer than humans?" Natalie asked.

"Eleven months normally, but they can carry their foal for a few months longer if they need to, just like normal horses." Shadow said.

"I see..." said Natalie, smiling, "good mothers then."

Shadow nodded and Merlas resumed cleaning off the foal. He had a patch of white on his forehead (a 'star').

Natalie looked at Shadow.
"I think you are more amazing than you think you are..." said Natalie softly.

Shadow didin't answer, watching the foal trying to bite his mother's ear.

Natalie sat in silence, watching the goings on.
"If you need more help...I'm here..." she said quietly.

"You need to look after Tomorrow." Shadow said firmly, watching Merlas tire of the foal's games and pin him down firmly with her nose.

"I do indeed..." said Natalie, walking into a hidden room near the back.
She walked out, holding Tomorrow.

The foal got back to his feet and sniffed curiously at Tomorrow. Shadow sighed.

Natalie smiled.
Tomorrow opened her eyes to see where all the hot breath was coming from.
She looked at the foal, and opened her mouth wide.
"Horsey," she said in a high voice, and giggled, as though it was the thing she was most sure of in life.
Natalie smiled.
"Your first word..." she said softly, "her first word Shadow."

Shadow smiled slightly.
"I think that this concludes my thoughts." She said.

Natalie grinned.
"Yes sweetie, that's a horsey..." said Natalie, crying slightly with happiness.
She held Tomorrow close.
"And I don't even have the book to write this down in..." she sighed, then, remembering she was a witch, summoned it.
"Will you write it down please Shad?" she asked.

Shadow nodded and wrote it down in her impecable cursive writing, along with Tomorrow's first laugh. When she had done, she summoned a large file, and started to write out an identity sheet for the foal.

When she came to the name, she smiled.

"Do you have one?" she asked.

"Yes." Shadow said. "Star, because of his marking, and Midnight, the bridge between today and tomorrow, because I am offering his as a gift to you and Tomorrow. In all, Midnight Star."

Natalie's eyes welled up again as she hugged Shadow lightly.
"That's beautiful..." said Natalie, "thank you Shadow...and I'm not sure I've told you yet...see for yourself."

Natalie touched the baby book with her wand, and the pages turned to the back page.

There was a title written, "Godmother" and under Godmother was written two names.

The page then turned to the first, where it stated Tomorrow's full name.
